2025 Strategic Priorities
Rural Maternal Health
IRHA is committed to addressing the growing crisis of maternal care deserts across Iowa. With over one-third of Iowa counties lacking adequate maternity care access, our focus is on expanding prenatal, delivery, and postpartum services in rural communities. In partnership with state and federal initiatives, IRHA supports efforts to stabilize labor and delivery units, extend Medicaid postpartum coverage, and grow the maternal health workforce through regional Centers of Excellence. These efforts aim to ensure that every rural Iowan has access to safe, timely, and culturally responsive maternal care.
Rural Aging-Friendly Services
As Iowa’s population ages, IRHA is prioritizing the development of age-friendly rural communities. We support initiatives that promote independence, reduce social isolation, and improve access to home- and community-based services. Through collaboration with Iowa’s Area Agencies on Aging and the Department of Health and Human Services, IRHA advocates for expanded caregiver support, transportation solutions, and programs that allow older adults to age in place with dignity and safety. Our goal is to ensure that rural Iowans can thrive at every stage of life.
Rural Cancer Prevention
Cancer remains a leading cause of death in rural Iowa, where screening rates are often lower and access to specialty care is limited. IRHA is working alongside partners like the Iowa Cancer Consortium to promote early detection, reduce disparities, and support rural providers. By leveraging data from the Iowa Cancer Registry and expanding outreach through programs, we supporting closing the gap in cancer outcomes and bring lifesaving prevention and treatment closer to home.
