Rural Health Advocacy, Policy, and Research
IRHA Policy Committee
The IRHA Policy Committee serves as a platform for members and the Board to engage directly with the development and implementation of healthcare policy at both the state and federal levels. The committee actively monitors rural health policy issues and shares relevant updates through the IRHA listserv. Members also benefit from opportunities to hear from state and national policy experts on pressing rural health topics, particularly during IRHA’s annual meeting.
National Rural Health Association (NRHA) Government Affairs
The NRHA Government Affairs team advocates for policies that enhance access to healthcare in rural America. Through its Government Affairs Committee, NRHA crafts policy priorities, provides expert guidance, and engages lawmakers on pressing rural health issues. The team also mobilizes members for grassroots advocacy, leads national campaigns, and advances legislative solutions tied to rural facilities, workforce development, and healthcare equity. Rural Policy Research Institute
The Rural Policy Research Institute (RUPRI) is a national, nonpartisan organization dedicated to providing objective, research-based analysis on the challenges, opportunities, and policy impacts affecting rural America. Founded in 1990, RUPRI brings together scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to inform and shape rural policy through data-driven insights and collaborative dialogue. Headquartered at the University of Iowa College of Public Health, RUPRI operates several initiatives, including the RUPRI Health Panel and the Center for Rural Health Policy Analysis, which are nationally recognized for their work on rural healthcare access, Medicare policy, and system design. Their research spans topics such as rural economic development, broadband access, cultural wealth, and governance, all with the goal of fostering sustainable and equitable rural communities. You can explore their work and publications at the RUPRI website.
Rural Health Research Centers (RHRCs)
The RHRCs are federally funded institutions that conduct policy-relevant research to inform efforts improving rural healthcare access, quality, and equity. Supported by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, these centers explore issues like hospital closures, workforce shortages, behavioral health, and maternal care. Their findings help guide federal and state decision-making and are publicly available through the Rural Health Research Gateway which is a central resource for reports, briefs, and data tools.
